Why we are Different

At Twice Exceptional Speech, Language, and Educational Therapy, we specialize in the treatment of speech-language pathology and language-based learning disorders. What sets us apart from other providers—such as neuropsychologists, special educators, academic language therapists, and tutors—is our comprehensive evaluation process and subsequent research-based intervention that is tailored to the way in which your student learns best. We begin by diagnosing conditions to the greatest degree of medical specificity.

It's important to recognize that speech and language disorders are medical conditions and learning disorders like dyslexia stem from neurobiological brain differences. This means that the brain of someone with dyslexia functions differently from that of a neurotypical individual. Research shows that 50% of children with a language disorder, 25% of those struggling with speech sound production, and 31% of children who stutter will later meet the criteria for dyslexia.

Given the high likelihood of these disorders co-occurring, you cannot rely on an educational solution to fix a medical problem. Instead, the most effective approach involves treatment by a speech-language pathologist following a medical plan of care. It's unreasonable to expect teachers, special educators, tutors, or other educational professionals to possess the specialized knowledge, training, or expertise required to address complex and often co-occurring medical conditions. However, given this specific approach even severely impacted students with speech-language and learning disorders can be completely remediated and fully catch up to their neurotypical peers.
